Shenango River Lake Recreation Area offers a scenic blend of water-based and land activities centered around the man-made reservoir formed by the Shenango River, drawing anglers, boaters, hikers, and families seeking outdoor adventure in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio.
Located along the Shenango River near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border, Shenango River Lake Recreation Area is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The area surrounds Shenango River Lake, a 3,400-acre reservoir created for flood control, water quality, and recreation. The landscape combines forested ridges, open water, and wetlands that support diverse ecosystems including migratory birds, white-tailed deer, and various fish species such as bass and walleye. Historically, the dam project was completed in 1965, transforming the valley and providing new recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, camping, and picnicking across the accessible shoreline and multiple developed facilities. The nearby forested hills and designated trails offer moderate hikes and wildlife watching. Scenic overlooks afford panoramic lake views and vibrant fall foliage. The recreation area serves as a popular destination for both day-use and extended stays, with opportunities for winter activities like ice fishing and snowmobiling. Its combination of natural beauty and water recreation makes it appealing to family groups, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts from the tri-state region.
